My Muse was tickled today, which activity in general tends to make said Muse very happy. (Unlike me. You tickle me, I’d better know you very well, or else there is a potential for a certain level of violence to be immediately forthcoming. )
The Question that inspired the tickling was about ‘accepting my niche’. What did that phrase mean to me?
That was a question that bore thinking about, so I went away for a while & did just that. Here are some of the answers I came up with.
It means that I’ve been a bit on the hard-headed side.
The original came from a coaching call on networking from the wonderful & wonderfully patient Iain Gray.
During the course of the call, when I’m sorry to say his patience was probably being a bit strained (tho’ he never showed it, awesome soul that he is!) by the fact that it turned out we had not nearly as much clue about who our Right People are as we thought we did, he talked about accepting our niche.
It took a few hours, but then WHAM! The floodgates of realization opened.
We should be marketing to the folk like us!!! Not in the financial sense, mind, or none of us will be getting anywhere, but in the tribal sense. We are who we are, and according to the customs of the Third Tribe this is a good thing.
So therefore, since your Tribe is at least usually composed of people who share traits in common with you, it would make sense that they would be the ones to market to, if you are interested in doing this successfully.
Now I know this probably all seems like a big DUH factor to you, but to us it was a Major Lightbulb moment.
Apparently, we have some more deprogramming to do. Somehow we had got it into our heads that people like us, those who see the world in unusual ways couldn’t possibly be our Right People. On my behalf, I will say that I think I was making a Usual Error and thinking that the people like us already thought in those ways, even tho’ I know for a fact that they do not.
However, it has meant that we’ve been needlessly hamstringing ourselves, trying to make ourselves into people we are only partly, to reach out to people who may or may not be ready to be reached out to by us.
It means putting on the big-girl panties.
In addition to the sheer loveliness of Goddess Leonie’s people, including Naomi Dunford herself, the thing that really smacked me between the eyes for this post was the part at the end where she talks about that fact that NO ONE IS BORN WITH A BRAND.
You create one by putting on the Big-girl Panties (or presumably the Big-boy version if that’s more appropriate ) and showing up.
Declaring who you are. Not in an obnoxious way, but not shrinking or shirking from the task either.
So for me, accepting our niche is partly about accepting our brand, which means accepting ourselves.
It means showing up, being brave, and being me.
In my case, it means accepting the woo and all that goes along with it. (Tho’ one of the things I need to get out of my head pronto is this silly notion that if it were mundane everyone would love it. NOT! )
It means while I don’t have to accept being put on a mountaintop, I do need to be aware that there are those who will try to put me there.
It means that I might want to prepare some explanations for what I do, in language that ‘reg’lar folks’ will understand.
It means accepting myself, my mission, and the things that we need to do to get our message out there.
The ever-wonderful MikeK made an amusing comment in the same thread about ‘Accept your niche, young Jedi.’, which is a lot closer to the truth than one might at first suppose.
To me, it IS rather mystical & exceedingly powerful. It’s about accepting the Path that has been shown to you as being your Best Path.
It’s about understanding & accepting the wonderful people in your Tribe, regardless of what the rest of society may think of them.
It’s about removing another barrier between you and your Truest Self.
It’s about flying free & soaring high.
Accepting your niche = accepting your people = accepting your life = accepting your self.
Pretty kyool stuff, don’t you think?
Your Question for the Day, should you choose to answer it (and I hope you will! ) is…
Are you ready to accept your niche, etc.?
Bright Blessings & Good Fortune!
